Carolina Bays Extension Parkway
Have you heard about the new connector of highway 31 located in South Carolina to highway 17 located in North Carolina? It is coming and that has been confirmed by the NC DOT. The current route has not yet been set in stone, however the DOT has released the study zone. This study zone will affect quite a few neighborhoods in the Brunswick County area, mainly but not limited to Calabash, North Carolina. See the below map provided by NC DOT to show the study area in red.

Will all residence in the red zone face losing their homes?
The answer to this is no! However SOME of these properties in the study area will be affected upon NC DOT making a decision about which route will be used in the construction of this multi lane expressway. See the link below for a list of all proposed routes for the Carolina Bays extension parkway.
Will I lose my home?
Eminent Domain is the governments right to acquire privately owned real estate for public use. However condemnation is the process by which the government exercises the right of eminent domain, whether in a judicial or administrative hearing. The owner of the private property will receive compensation for loosing the property and an appraisal will take place to determine a value of the property. It is the goal for the appraisal to be completed an offer on the property to be made and negotiations and agreements to take place. The goal is not to simply take ones private property and throw them out on the street.
How will a final route be selected?
Many factors are taken into account when determining which route will ultimately be taken. These factors include but are not limited to environmental impacts, human impacts, permitting impacts and input from public and local agencies. Traffic patterns and commutes are taken into account, schools churches and other publicly owned buildings will also be taken into account during this process. It is the ultimate goal of the NC DOT to select the route with the least amount of harm to citizens and the surrounding environment.
